Black watermelons are not a different species. They grow from the same vines as regular red-fleshed sweet melons.
The difference is in how they mature on the vine—the skin of black watermelons will stay green when ripe, while red-fleshing varieties turn that familiar bright color at maturity.
This gives them their unique dark flesh and milder flavor.
These fruits also tend to be much sweeter than either yellow or orange-fleshed honeydew types because less sugar has been converted into the water during ripening (in other words, more sweetness).
The flavor of this fruit is best described as a milder version of the traditional melon taste we all know and love & it has been described as tasting like cantaloupe or honeydew with hints of vanilla.
It’s also been said that these fruits have notes of banana in their flavor profile.
It’s also important to note that black watermelon is not seedless—it contains the same tiny, edible seeds as most other varieties.
How Can You Tell If A Watermelon Is Sweet Or Not?
The best way to tell whether a watermelon is sweet or not is by knocking on the outside of it with your knuckles.
If you can hear a deep, thumping sound coming from within, then that means it’s ripe for the picking and has lots of juice inside!
On the other hand, if there isn’t any noise when you knock on it, don’t bother buying one because it is probably dry and won’t be good.
Another thing to look out for is seeds that should be brown rather than black, which also indicates ripeness.
What’s a Black Watermelon?
Black watermelons are the same as regular watermelons but with a dark green rind.
The black color is due to high levels of anthocyanins, which also give blueberries their deep hue.
Anthocyanin is an antioxidant that may help prevent cancer and other diseases.
It’s likely safe for most people in small amounts or when cooked, although there isn’t much research on its effects if eaten raw (as you would do with “normal” watermelon).
Regardless of how it tastes, though, these melons are healthy and good for you. Like any other fruit or vegetable can be found at your local grocery store!
How Much Does a Black Diamond Watermelon Cost?
Black diamond watermelons are a special type of watermelon. They have dark, black skin, and they’re shaped like diamonds.
Because they don’t turn red when ripe, you can only tell if it is ready to eat by its weight – which should be 40-50% of normal for that variety.
Black Diamonds usually cost $20-$25 per melon or more than regular ones because their color makes them rare and unique.

Why is Black Watermelon So Expensive?
Black watermelon is a rare product. It’s not often found in stores, but it costs much more than the average watermelon when it is.
They are cultivated from wild rice plants called Oryza sativa subspecies indica and nivara, which commonly grow in Southeast Asia.
This variety of plants has adapted over time to absorb high amounts of anthocyanin naturally.
This pigment gives fruits like blueberries their color and creates the deep reds seen with radicchio lettuce.
However, unlike blueberries, these melons can be left out for days without getting bruised because they have low acidity levels (similar to a cucumber).
Is It Bad to Eat Black Watermelon?
No, it’s quite healthy. Black watermelon contains many antioxidants which are good for your skin and helps prevent cancer.
They are very nutritious in vitamins and minerals. It contains potassium which is great for your heart.
Studies show that these watermelons are more beneficial to the body than regular red ones. They contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, which helps prevent cancer and lower blood pressure!

Small, oblong fruit similar to Charleston Gray except for the smaller size of fruit and vine; weighs pounds or Bush Sugar Baby. (FF) 85 days.
Large yields of high-quality sweet pinkish-red flesh with a low seed count give it a more desirable flavor than other cucurbits (squash).
